Census

Census refers to the published census returns for England and Wales, Scotland (1801-1931) and Ireland (1811-1911).

Registrar General

Register General annual and decennial reports of the Registrar General of England (and Wales) and Scotland.

The National Archives (TNA)

The resource includes reproductions of a wide range of archival material housed at TNA.

Essays

Essays covers almost 200 specially written essays on the history and development of population statistics in the British Isles.

Legislation

Full texts of all primary legislation relating to the census and registration between 1800 and 1937.

All this material can be searched by keyword, though the possibility of searching for place names in Census and Registrar General may be reduced because of spelling variation in the originals. We recommend that if you are looking for the population of a parish, county or other administrative unit for a particular year you use the browse facility.
